Ang Mga Lalaki at Prostate Cancer

Dr. Elvie Victonette B. Razon-Gonzalez

Prostate cancer, as the name itself suggests, is cancer of the prostate – the gland where the seminal fluid is produced which is important in the nourishment and transportation of the sperm. Prostate is a very common cancer in men. Some are slow-growing while others are aggressively spreading.

Like other types of cancers, the exact cause of prostate cancer is not known. But there are risk factors that increase the likelihood of getting the cancer over time. Age poses a risk in developing prostate cancer – getting older increases the risk. Other risk factors are family history of cancer, faults in the genetical imprints, being a black Carribean or African is a risk involving ethnicity, previous cancer, and many other factors.

You may not feel anything in the early stage of prostate cancer. But when the advanced one sets in, some of the symptoms include: difficulty in passing urine, frequent in urination especially at night, blood in the urine, impotence, pain in the hips, back or other areas where the cancer might have spread, weakness of the lower extremities. The symptoms may also suggest other diseases which emphasizes the importance of consulting your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Different factors are to be considered in undergoing treatment for your prostate cancer. These include the virulence of the cancer cells, your overall health status, the size of metastasis, potential benefits and side effects. With the early stage of the cancer which is diagnosed, treatment may not be required immediately. Doctors suggest surveillance for the early stages. Other treatment options are radiation therapy, hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, etc.

Kumonsulta sa isang urologist kung ikaw ay may nararamdamang simtomas nito at kung ikaw ay at least 50 years old.
